This album is by no means a new release. However, it received only limited distribution as a cassette on Russian label, Metal Agen, back in ’97. This improved version transfers the cult classic to CD with new artwork and a bonus song. The band once described their style as Ancient Doom Metal. To elaborate, there is a discernable Manowar and Bathory atmosphere to the music, which is strengthened by the Viking themed lyrics. There is also a common folksy element not unlike once Belarusian contemporaries, Gods Tower. However, it is the blend of plodding rhythms, stunning Epic Metal leads and captivating vocals that make Scald so special. If you listen to the opening hymn called “Night Sky” and are not touched by its eloquence then you are already dead. The sheer quality is indisputable. Scald maintains that high standard across their one and sadly only album. Alas! If only their singer had not been prematurely whisked away to Valhalla the band could have attained so much more. And where are their successors? Can nobody rival them? RIP…
